Life and Work of Orleans United Church

Life and Work for the week of April 10th

As we near the end of our journey toward Easter, we reach the fifth and final installment of our Lenten sermon series about the Discipline of Living a More Compassionate Life.  Today’s theme is perhaps the most challenging of all, “compassion for those who oppose us.”

In addition, with our children, we continue creating our Lenten collage based on The Lord’s Prayer in the Discovery Garden (this week, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”).

CARE & SUPPORT TEAM

Thought for the Week

Risking to think compassionately about someone who offends you

opens the possibility to care for that person in a way that resembles the love of God.

CST’s Prayer Ministry strives to hold every person given to us in the light of God’s loving acceptance … even those who at the moment are proving themselves unlovable.  In fact, even though these prayers sometimes feel like a last resort, they also can soften the hearts of pray-ee and pray-er alike.  If you have someone you’d like us to pray for, please contact us by speaking confidentially with a member of CST at our “Care Alcove” in the Narthex, or by emailing our private mailbox at ouc.CST@rogers.com.

Worship during Holy WeekWhen Palm Sunday arrives on April 17, Christians world-wide will begin a sacred journey with Jesus through the final week of his life on earth, as the Bible tells it.  The highlights include celebrating Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem [Palm Sunday], his final meal with the disciples [Maundy Thursday], his trial and crucifixion [Good Friday], and culminating with his resurrection to life [Easter Sunday].  We have worship experiences for each of these holy days and encourage you to spiritually engage in the whole journey together with Jesus and his followers at OUC.  Please see the bulletin insert for worship times and details.

2ND ANNUAL PALM SUNDAY BAKE SALE – We are calling all bakers to bake some yummy goodies for this worthy cause.  We also need non-bakers to come buy those yummy morsels so you have great baking for Easter weekend.  Drop your baking off at the table in the hall before the service on April 17th.  The goodies will be available for sale after the service (11 a.m.).  This is just a little help for the non-bakers and also to put a little money in the church coffers.  Looking forward to seeing and chatting with you.  If you have any questions, please contact Mary Allen at maryandnoel@rogers.com or (613) 837-6662.

NEWCOMERS EVENING:  Tuesday, April 26, 2011, 7-8pm, in the Chapel.  Families are welcome.

The Elders will be holding a meeting for all newcomers who have begun attending OUC over the past year.

We want to see how you are doing in getting connected to OUC and how OUC is meeting your needs

And we simply would like to get to know you better.  If you are interested, contact Jean at the church.

REMINDER:  Anyone who ordered berries last Sunday or during this week, please see Joan with payments and pickup, after church.

WOMEN’S RETREAT – The theme this year is the Power of Prayer.  We gather at beautiful Camp Galilee  for a time of reflection, friendship, fun, and renewal.  If you have never been to Women’s Retreat drop by the table in the hall and hear all about it.  It is a wonderful way to get know more of the women at OUC. Mark your calendar for April 29-May 1.  Registration info in the hall or call the office.

OBSERVER SUBSCRIPTION time is here.  This is the United Church magazine that examines all the issues of our faith and times.  Well written and often controversial, it's well worth a look, for those of you who don't know it.  The cost is $20 at the group rate.  Contact Shirley and Peter Holt to renew your subscription, at 613-841-5143 or sholt5143@rogers.com.  We will be available in the hall after Easter.

ORLEANS CHRISTIAN WOMEN'S CLUB will meet on Wed. April 13 at 9:30 am, in the hall of OUC.  This month Carole Seguin will speak to us about the Ottawa Municipal Museums, including the Billings Estate.  Our inspirational speaker, Irene Williams, will tell us about coping with trials and transitions.  To make a reservation, call Shirley Holt at 613-841-5143.

Help Wanted...

As we anticipate the projects, programs and ministries of the upcoming months, we have a need for several special people to take on time-limited projects.  Please search your heart and consider if you might be able to share your gifts with us.  We are in need of:

- Summer Sunday school co-ordinator - involves overseeing group Sunday school from June to September - but does not involve teaching every week!

- Summer Sunday school leaders - families/individuals who would like to run an all-ages group Sunday school for one (or more) Sundays in June, July or August - curriculum and materials provided, all you need is a sense of humour and willingness to play!!

If God is calling you to serve in one of these ways, please let Rev. Molly or Rev. Glen know as soon as possible.  In addition, there are always ministry opportunities within our church life available for those who feel called.  Let us know how you would like to put your gifts into action

CAMP BITOBI - Mark your calendars for June 10 – 12th, the week-end before Father's Day.  Good times, good fellowship, great outdoor surroundings.  Especially good for families; however everyone is welcome.  Reasonably priced! Registration forms available in early May.  Contact Chalid Brockelbank 613-837-6313.

CAMP KALALLA 2011 - Employment opportunities: July 15-22, July 2-29 & July 29 – Aug. 6.  Positions available include:  cook, lifeguard, counsellor, crafts resource, business manager, & environment resource. Email staffing@kalalla.com or visit www.kalalla.com.  For more info see the bulletin board in the Hall.

CATERING CORNER - Thank you to all who baked muffins and cookies, made sandwiches, packed brown bag lunches for 154 hungry people, donated time, work and cash to this fund-raising effort.  Again, it was a resounding success.  Joan.

Save Your Milk Bagsplease save outer milk bags.  A group in the church will crochet them into sleeping mats that will be shipped to Haiti and other communities in crisis.  Drop them off in the church hall.

Pennies for Peace   We had another great week of penny collecting … $156!  Overall we have collected $640.50 for Pennies for Peace - amazing!  Thanks to all for bringing in pennies and to everyone who stayed after service to help roll them.  We have 2 Sundays to go so please bring as many pennies as you can.  Of course silver coins are most welcome too.  OUC’s Outreach Committee thanks you for your compassion.

Some people have asked about last week's notice, especially the quote: "If you educate a boy you educate an individual, but if you educate a girl you educate a community."  This is an African proverb quoted in the Central Asia Institute website.  Greg Mortensen (co-founder of Central Asia Institute [CAI] and Pennies for Peace [P4P]) felt this theme could help raise awareness globally to empower the young women of Afghanistan and Pakistan whose education is too often ignored.   The primary goal of the CAI is to encourage local men and women to be fully involved in every aspect of a school building project.  Through our act of penny collecting we are helping to provide personal literacy and community building for girls and boys alike in this war ravaged part of the world.  It is part of our outreach mission to "go make a difference" in our world.  Would you like to discuss P4P further?  Why not come help roll pennies next Sunday in the Library after worship.  Let’s keep the pennies rolling!
